Italy’s community-owned theaters join the UNESCO World Heritage list

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

A remarkable network of 10 historic theaters in central Italy has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing an architectural and social model that transformed theater from an aristocratic privilege into a shared civic institution.

The decision was approved during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to 29, 2026. The inscription brings Italy’s total number of World Heritage properties to 62.
