A major milestone for Iowa’s Italian American community is approaching as the Italian-American Cultural Center of Iowa prepares to inaugurate its new headquarters in Des Moines on October 25 and 26, 2026.
Located at 2633 Fleur Drive, the center occupies the historic Butler Mansion, a landmark dating back to the 1930s that has undergone extensive renovation and expansion. The ambitious project, estimated at approximately $20 million, aims to create a permanent home for Italian American heritage while welcoming visitors from across Iowa and beyond.
The new facility combines a museum dedicated to Italian immigration and its contributions to Iowa, a library, a café, a wine bar, an Italian marketplace, and spaces for cooking classes, language courses, cultural activities, and community gatherings. Plans also include bocce courts and accommodations for overnight visitors.
The celebrations begin Sunday, October 25, with a public open house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can explore the renovated building, enjoy Italian specialties from Graziano’s Food Truck, and attend a traditional Italian dance performance scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The official ribbon-cutting ceremony follows Monday, October 26, at 4:30 p.m.
The project represents the culmination of more than 25 years of commitment by local Italian Americans determined to preserve their ancestors’ stories and traditions.
Beyond celebrating the past, the center seeks to strengthen cultural connections between generations, promote Italian heritage, and become a lasting destination for education, hospitality, and community life in the American Midwest.
