This summer my husband and I spent several weeks in Puglia and Abruzzo. We have been to Puglia several times in the past. Puglia is the region that part of my family comes from, so we have visited there before. However, it was the first time that we traveled in Abruzzo, from which another part of my family hails, so we were excited to explore both regions of southern Italy.
Throughout our travels we were impressed by the expanses of ancient olive groves and lush fruit orchards, but also of the many gentle wheat fields. Abruzzo and Puglia are the breadbaskets of Italy. Puglia alone supplies up to 35 percent of the wheat produced in Italy.
