Southern Italy drives retail growth as regional gaps reshape the market

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy’s large-scale retail sector is undergoing a significant transformation, with growth increasingly driven by the central and southern regions rather than the traditional economic strongholds of the north. This shift reflects broader changes in consumer behavior, regional dynamics, and competitive strategies across the country.

According to recent market analysis, the organized retail sector in southern and central Italy has expanded at a faster pace than the rest of the country. Between 2014 and 2025, annual growth in these areas reached +4.4%, compared to +2.8% in northern regions, meaning the South grew about 1.6 times faster despite having an overall market size roughly 40% smaller.
