Calabria is well known for its crystal-clear sea waters and is dotted with ancient villages, castles, and archaeological parks. There are three national parks in the region. The first is Pollino National Park, which is also the largest in Italy.
The park stretches across the province of Cosenza in Calabria and into Matera and Potenza in the region of Basilicata. It is home to the oldest European tree, a Heldreich’s pine, estimated at 1,230 years old. The eastern side of the park slopes toward the Ionian Sea while the western side overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea.
