Italy has introduced a new set of renewable energy requirements that could significantly change the way major home renovations are planned and carried out. Since August 3, 2026, certain renovation projects involving existing buildings must incorporate renewable energy systems and meet minimum clean-energy thresholds.
The rules stem from Legislative Decree No. 5 of January 9, 2026, which implements the European Union’s RED III renewable energy directive and updates Italy’s previous framework established under Legislative Decree 199/2021. The impact depends largely on the scale of the renovation.
