Italy is entering one of the largest intergenerational wealth transfers in its modern history, a shift that may help explain how a country burdened by weak productivity, low employment and slow growth continues to sustain comparatively high levels of private consumption and household security.
Over the next 10 years, an estimated €1.8 trillion in financial and real estate wealth is expected to move from older Italians to their children and grandchildren. That means roughly €180 billion a year changing hands through inheritance and family transfers.
