Italian American investor Matt Rizzetta dreams big for Napoli sports

Naples could become one of Europe’s most ambitious multi-sport hubs if the vision of Italian-American entrepreneur Matt Rizzetta becomes reality.

Already president of Napoli Basket and owner of Campobasso FC, Rizzetta has outlined a long-term strategy that aims to elevate Naples onto the international sports stage through basketball, infrastructure development, and potentially even a future connection to the NBA’s European expansion plans.

Rizzetta, founder of Underdog Global Partners, believes Naples possesses many of the characteristics needed to attract major international sports investments. With a metropolitan population estimated between 3 and 4 million people, a strong tourism industry, and a passionate sports culture, he sees the city as an underutilized market capable of competing with some of Europe’s leading destinations.

His plans for Napoli Basket are particularly ambitious. The club’s ownership group has discussed building a modern arena that could seat approximately 12,000 spectators and host top-level European competitions. The ultimate objective is to establish Naples among the continent’s elite basketball destinations, whether through the EuroLeague or a future NBA Europe project. Rizzetta has repeatedly emphasized a gradual approach – first strengthening the team, then competing internationally, and eventually pursuing the highest levels of the sport.

At the same time, Rizzetta’s name has been linked to speculation surrounding SSC Napoli. Reports in Italy indicated that an American-led consortium associated with the Italian-American businessman explored a potential acquisition of the Serie A champions, with figures reportedly reaching €2 billion. However, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has made it clear that Napoli is not for sale, especially as the organization approaches its 100th anniversary in August 2026.

Whether in basketball, football, or urban development, Rizzetta’s vision extends beyond individual teams. His goal is to position Naples as a global sports capital capable of attracting international events, investors, and fans. While many elements of the project remain aspirational, the scale of the ambition reflects a growing belief that Southern Italy can play a much larger role in the future of European sports.
