American travelers renew their love affair with Italy and Europe

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Data elaborated by Centro Studi Americani show that American travelers are showing interest in European vacations, and Italy remains one of their favorite destinations. The market carries economic weight, with U.S. travelers supporting an international tourism sector valued at hundreds of billions of dollars through spending on flights, accommodations, dining, shopping and cultural experiences.

Preliminary figures show that more than 4 million travelers from the United States visited Italy in 2025, matching the previous year. They accounted for 4.4% of international travelers entering the country and generated 37.6 million overnight stays. Their average visit lasted 8.6 nights, while couples represented 42% of American travel groups.

Rome continues to serve as a gateway, offering the combination of ancient history, art, religious heritage and contemporary Italian life that many Americans seek. Sardinia is gaining visibility for its beaches, natural landscapes, cuisine and smaller communities. Beyond famous cities and coastal resorts, historic villages are attracting visitors interested in slower, more personal travel.

Food and wine remain central to Italy’s appeal. Americans increasingly want to taste regional dishes, visit vineyards, explore local markets and understand the traditions behind Italian products. Interest in Italian food-and-wine tourism has risen sharply, with the segment recording growth of 176% over the past decade.

This demand reflects a broader change in travel habits. Many U.S. visitors are moving beyond standard sightseeing itineraries and choosing longer stays, locally owned accommodations and experiences connected to residents. Italy’s advantage lies in its variety – from Rome’s monuments and Sardinia’s coastline to medieval towns where history and daily life remain connected.
