Italian wine maintains market by holding prices down

The Euro goes up and down, and often so does the price of European wine we see in the United States. But not Italy. Wines from there don't have the price volatility of those from France or Germany. I had the chance to speak with Fabrizio Pedrolli, founder of Vias Imports, one of the largest Italian wine importers and one that cleared $40 million in revenue last year with sales growing about 7 percent a year.

Italians keep prices stable, Mr. Pedrolli said, because the industry depends upon exports. The growing American market is perhaps the most important. "If they increase the price, they know they can lose some of the U.S. market and may never get it back," he said, noting that wines from around the world are ready to fill that gap.
