First came Trapizzino, and now comes Tramezzini. Lower East Siders are getting a serious education in Italian street sandos. Back in February, the Roman pizza pocket operation, Trapizzino, opened on Orchard Street. Now Tramezzini, a Smorgasburg vendor specializing in Venetian sandwiches, is opening just a handful of blocks away, on Houston Street.
As you can see from the photos, these sandos are highly portable. In their Best of New York issue, New York magazine described tramezzini as “Italy’s answer to England’s tea sandwiches — bar food designed for ease of entering one’s maw between sips of espresso or gulps of Negronis.” Cipriani Le Specialità’s version landed on their list of “The Absolute Best Sandwich to Eat at Your Desk.”
