At Wimbledon, Italy beats the U.S.: Jannik Sinner takes down Ben Shelton and avenges Lorenzo Sonego, who had been knocked out by the American in the previous round. In the next round, the world No. 1 from Italy will try to do the same against Novak Djokovic, who defeated another Italian, Flavio Cobolli.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. You just don’t see that when you're in the draw. Playing against him, it’s almost like everything’s happening at double speed.” Those were Ben Shelton’s first words after the match.
For the past 36 hours, all of Italy had been holding its breath over concerns about Sinner’s elbow, which he injured during the fourth round. But Jannik showed up on Court 1 wearing a white compression sleeve on his right arm and, as if nothing had happened, calmly dispatched Shelton—a big server—in straight sets without dropping serve. The win sends him to his fourth consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, and it’s his sixth victory in seven matches against Shelton.
