The Williamsville Central School District will continue talking about changing Columbus Day on its district calendar to Indigenous Peoples Day. Several speakers told the school board on Tuesday night the federal holiday allows Italian-Americans to celebrate their heritage and traditions.
"We are all in favor of celebrating with Native Americans, but not at the cost of Italian-Americans," said Teresa Marcello, first vice president of the Federation of Italian-American Societies in Western New York. School Board President Toni Vazquez, who suggested the change several months ago, said she did not intend to insult anyone by the change.
