This Seaside Italian Town Was Named Europe’s Best Underrated Destination for Ice Cream—and It Invented Its Own Gelato Treat

Italy and gelato are hardly an unexpected pairing, but you don’t have to elbow your way through Rome or Florence to find some of the country’s best frozen treats. Car rental company Avis recently released a list of Europe’s best underrated ice cream destinations and topping the list was Pizzo, a small seaside town in Calabria with an outsized appetite for gelato and an impressive concentration of highly rated gelaterias.

To find Europe’s less obvious ice cream hot spots, the company compared destinations using several factors, including the number of ice cream shops listed on Tripadvisor, the number per capita, average ratings, the amount of five-star reviews, and worldwide Google search volume for destination-specific ice cream terms.
