The world’s smallest theater opens inside an abandoned newsstand in southern Italy

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

In the southern Italian town of San Severo, a former street newsstand has been transformed into an extraordinarily small yet innovative performance venue, offering a new approach to live theater. The project, known as Teatro Edicola, officially opened on March 27, 2026, in conjunction with World Theatre Day, and has quickly gained attention for its unconventional format and creative reuse of urban space.

The theater is striking for its size. It can host only 6 audience members per performance, making it one of the smallest functioning theaters in the world. Actors perform inside the structure of the old kiosk, while spectators are seated just outside, often less than 1 meter away.
