The Village: Life in New Haven's Little Italy

When: Wed, Jun 10, 2026 at 6:00 PM - Where: North Haven Memorial Library, 17 Elm St, North Haven, CT, 06473

Starting in the late 19th century, immigrants from Italy began flooding into New Haven to work in the city's many factories. People from the Amalfi coast settled in the Wooster Square area, turning it into an Italian American enclave, with rich cultural traditions.

Today, few descendants of the immigrants still live in Wooster Square, but vestiges of their community remain–in the church, the ethnic societies and their festas, and the pizza joints and pastry shops. Most vividly, the village lives on in the fond memories of the people who grew up there.
