Rome becomes a giant movie set as cinema drives a new wave of tourism

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Rome is increasingly becoming not only one of the world’s most visited cities, but also one of its busiest open-air film studios. During the first 6 months of 2026, the Italian capital hosted 933 film and television shoots – an average of more than 5 every day.

The figures confirm how deeply cinema has returned to Rome’s streets, squares and historic landmarks. February was the busiest month, with 227 shoots, followed by June with 169. April and May each recorded 150, while January had 124 and March 113.
