Rome's run in the top tier of the Italian league ended in December 2020, when Virtus Roma, burdened by enormous financial difficulties, withdrew from the competition mid-season after deciding not to pay its league fees. It was an inglorious end for a club that had played a significant role in the sporting history of the Italian capital.
The club's legacy was eventually adopted by Virtus 1960, which is currently competing for promotion to the Italian second division. The Eternal City, however, will once again have a team in the top tier of Italian basketball next season, driven by the momentum of the NBA Europe project.
