Luciano Pavarotti's legacy lives on as Modena conservatory takes his name

The Italian cities of Modena and Carpi have paid a special tribute to Luciano Pavarotti, officially renaming their state music conservatory in honor of the legendary tenor on October 12, 2026, the 91st anniversary of his birth.

The ceremony took place at the conservatory's headquarters on Via Goldoni in Modena, where a commemorative plaque was unveiled in the presence of Italy's Minister of Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, local authorities, and members of the Pavarotti family.

Among those attending were Nicoletta Mantovani, Pavarotti's widow, his daughters Cristina and Alice, and celebrated soprano Raina Kabaivanska.

Mantovani welcomed the dedication as an extraordinary birthday gift, emphasizing Pavarotti's lifelong affection for young musicians and his belief that talent must be accompanied by discipline, dedication, and passion.

Conservatory director Giuseppe Fausto Modugno described the renaming as the culmination of a process lasting approximately 2–3 years, strengthening the institution's international identity.

The celebration continued at the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni with a concert honoring the tenor's artistic collaboration with Italian American composer Henry Mancini, whose celebrated works include Moon River and the music for The Pink Panther.

The program featured the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation Orchestra and 4 emerging opera singers supported by the foundation.

Born in Modena in 1935, Pavarotti became one of the world's most recognizable operatic voices, bringing Italian music to audiences across continents.

The newly named conservatory will now carry his artistic legacy forward, inspiring future generations of musicians.
