It was once thought that you’d get Italy all to yourself if you traveled October to April and while that is no longer the case, we still think it is hands down the best time to experience Italy’s most authentic self. Is Shoulder Season Even Still a Thing? Kind of! It is definitely quieter but visiting October through April is a totally different vibe and one that we highly recommend. The locals aren’t frazzled. You get that coveted reservation. The sun isn’t burning through your skin. Summer survival mode is decidedly off and Italy has taken a deep breath and settled into the autumn rhythm.
Having said this, the major sights in the Big Three – Rome, Florence, and Venice – draw an influx of visitors all year round. So while the city itself may seem quieter, the sights may still seem busy. The best way to tackle this is to visit early in the morning and especially on a weekday. We also highly recommend seeing them with a private guide – or an exclusive experience, if you can swing it – who will curate your experience.
