Joe Tordella joined the U.S. Consulate General in Florence as Consul General in August 2026. Prior to this assignment, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia.
Previously, Mr. Tordella led communications for the State Department’s policies and programs in the Western Hemisphere and served as a special assistant to the global director of U.S. public diplomacy.
He also served at the U.S. embassies in Barbados, Israel, Libya, Moldova, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.
Prior to joining the U.S. diplomatic corps in 2007, Mr. Tordella worked as a strategy consultant for IBM and Booz Allen Hamilton. He earned a graduate degree from the London School of Economics and an undergraduate degree from American University. Mr. Tordella speaks Italian, Arabic, Russian, and Spanish.
