Italy’s mid‑sized cities: the quiet engine of renewed growth and resilience

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

In recent years, Italy’s so‑called mid‑sized cities have emerged as surprising hubs of vitality – blending economic strength, social dynamism and a higher quality of life that stands out compared with both large metropolises and smaller towns.

According to the latest nationwide survey, there are 157 of these cities scattered across the peninsula – 73 in the North, 40 in the Centre and 44 in the South – together home to over 10.6 million people, roughly 18.1% of the Italian population.
