Italy-U.S. flights reach $3.6 billion as demand grows and U.S. airlines dominate

The air travel market between Italy and the United States continues to expand, reaching a total value of about $3.6 billion and confirming its strategic importance for transatlantic mobility.

In 2025, nearly 5.78 million passengers flew on nonstop routes between the two countries, the highest figure ever recorded. This represents an 85% increase compared to 2015, highlighting the strong recovery and long-term growth of demand.

Despite this growth, the market remains heavily dominated by U.S. airlines. About two-thirds of passengers chose one of the three major American carriers, led by Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, which together control a significant share of capacity and routes.

Ticket revenues alone generate roughly $3.6 billion annually, with an average fare of around $618 per passenger. This makes the Italy–U.S. corridor one of the most profitable long-haul markets in Europe, driven by both tourism and business travel.

The busiest connection is the Rome–Milan to New York route, which continues to attract the highest number of travelers. Demand is fueled by a mix of leisure trips, family visits, and corporate travel, with premium cabins playing an increasingly important role in airline revenues.

Italian carriers, however, face a more challenging position. While they benefit from strong outbound demand, they struggle to match the scale and network strength of their American competitors. Limited long-haul fleets and fewer direct connections reduce their market share, leaving them at a disadvantage despite operating on home turf.

At the same time, the broader geopolitical environment has introduced new variables. Changes in U.S. border policies and stricter controls have influenced travel flows, but Italy has shown resilience compared to other major European countries, continuing to record growth on both inbound and outbound traffic.

Looking ahead, the Italy–U.S. air travel market is expected to remain highly competitive. Airlines are adjusting capacity, optimizing routes, and focusing on profitability as fuel costs and global uncertainty impact the industry. Even so, with nearly 6 million passengers annually and steady demand, this transatlantic corridor remains a key pillar of international aviation.
