Italy is undergoing a major transformation of its regional rail system, with large-scale investments aimed at improving reliability, sustainability, and passenger experience. The strategy focuses on upgrading trains, modernizing infrastructure, and strengthening connections between cities, suburbs, ports, and airports.
A central pillar of this effort is fleet renewal. Around €6 billion has been allocated to purchase roughly 600 new regional trains, with the goal of replacing about 80% of the existing fleet. By 2027, more than 1,000 next-generation trains are expected to be in service nationwide, dramatically lowering the average age of rolling stock and increasing efficiency.
