Italy records the EU’s lowest obesity rate as Europe confronts a growing weight challenge

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy stands out in Europe for a particularly significant health statistic: it has the lowest adult obesity rate in the European Union. New Eurostat data for 2025 show that only 7% of Italians aged 18 and older are classified as obese, less than half the EU average of 16.3%.

The Italian result is especially notable because excess weight remains widespread across Europe. Overall, 35.4% of EU adults are classified as pre-obese, with a body mass index between 25 and 30, while another 16.3% have a BMI of at least 30 and are therefore considered obese.
