Italy reaffirms U.S. alliance while respecting its own laws and international agreements

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy has reaffirmed its strong and enduring alliance with the United States while clarifying the legal and institutional framework guiding its decisions in the current Middle East crisis. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto addressed Parliament to underline a key point: Italy remains a reliable U.S. partner, but its actions are carried out in full respect of national law and international agreements.

The transatlantic relationship between Italy and United States spans more than 75 years and continues to be a pillar of global security. Italy hosts important U.S. military facilities that support NATO operations and broader stability across Europe and the Mediterranean. These bases are essential logistical hubs, and cooperation remains constant and active.

At the same time, Italian authorities have clarified that alliance does not mean automatic operational involvement in every military request. Some recent U.S. requests related to operations near Iran were carefully reviewed but not authorized, as they went beyond previously agreed frameworks. This decision reflects procedure, not political distance.

Italy currently maintains around 2,000 troops deployed in the broader Middle East, contributing to security, monitoring, and protection efforts. The government is also focused on safeguarding tens of thousands of Italian citizens living in the region. These responsibilities require a cautious and balanced approach, especially as tensions risk wider escalation.

The economic dimension is equally relevant. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20%–30% of global oil flows, remains a sensitive critical point.  Any disruption can push energy prices higher, with recent fluctuations ranging from about $70 to over $100 per barrel. Stability in the region is therefore a shared priority for both Europe and the United States.

Italy’s position ultimately reflects a dual commitment – unwavering support for its American ally and strict adherence to democratic processes and international law. This balance strengthens, rather than weakens, the alliance. It demonstrates that mature partnerships allow for coordination, transparency, and respect for sovereignty.

In this context, Italy continues to work closely with Washington and NATO partners, promoting de-escalation while remaining fully aligned on the broader goal of international security and stability.
