A Nutella jar drifts through NASA’s Artemis II mission and goes viral

During a live broadcast of NASA’s Artemis II mission, a small and unexpected detail captured global attention: a jar of Nutella drifting inside the Orion spacecraft. The brief scene – lasting only a few seconds – quickly spread across social media, turning into one of the most talked-about moments of the mission.

The incident occurred on April 6, 2026, just minutes before the crew reached a record-breaking distance of about 252,752 miles (over 406,000 km) from Earth, surpassing the previous mark set in 1970 during Apollo 13. At that point, Artemis II had already become the farthest human spaceflight ever conducted.

In microgravity, objects float freely, and the jar appeared to glide across the cabin, briefly entering the camera frame before drifting out of view. The clip, roughly 5 seconds long, was enough to go viral worldwide. Online users quickly labeled it the “best accidental commercial ever,” highlighting how a simple everyday product ended up in deep space without any apparent planning.

NASA clarified that the appearance was not a paid promotion. According to the agency, food items are not selected through brand partnerships, and the Nutella jar was simply part of the crew’s provisions. The Artemis II menu includes about 189 food options, carefully designed for a 10-day mission to balance nutrition, safety, and astronaut morale.

The episode also sparked debate about the future of advertising in space, with some observers wondering whether such moments could eventually be used intentionally. Others even questioned whether the footage was real or AI-generated, though it was confirmed as authentic.

Beyond the viral curiosity, Artemis II remains a historic milestone. The mission marks humanity’s return to lunar orbit after more than 50 years and serves as a key step toward future Moon and Mars exploration.
