Italy and the United States strengthen healthcare cooperation through new scientific partnership

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy and the United States are strengthening their partnership in healthcare through a new agreement linking Naples-based Bourelly Group with the Philadelphia-based Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO).

Signed in Philadelphia in October 2026, the memorandum of understanding focuses on bringing medical services closer to patients through artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and digital technology. The goal is to connect scientific discoveries with practical tools that can improve local care and emergency response.

The agreement followed a two-city American mission by Bourelly Group CEO Guido Bourelly. In Washington, he participated in the ONE HEALTH Italian-American Scientific Forum, organized by SHRO and the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF). The event brought together researchers, business leaders, and healthcare professionals to explore the future of medicine.

In Philadelphia, Bourelly visited two SHRO research centers and met with scientist Antonio Giordano and SHRO Vice President Giancarlo Arra. Discussions highlighted opportunities to combine cancer research, biotechnology, and medical technology with better access to care.

One promising example is Smart Ambulance, a project developed by Bourelly Group with CoRiTeL and TIM Enterprise. Using 5G connectivity, the system is designed to transmit patients’ vital signs and video to hospital specialists while an ambulance is still on the road. A first operational prototype is planned for December 2026. Further testing and validation will follow before any broader deployment is considered.

The initiative offers a concrete example of how Italian technology and Italian American scientific expertise can work together – transforming international cooperation into potentially faster, more connected, and more accessible healthcare.
