A breakthrough in cancer research led by Italian scientists is opening new possibilities for treating tumors that have so far resisted immunotherapy. The study, carried out by researchers at IFOM – the AIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan – together with teams from the University of Turin and the University of Milan, highlights the strong Italian identity behind the discovery and its scientific leadership.
The research focuses on so-called “cold” tumors, which account for a large share of solid cancers. These tumors are difficult to treat because they remain invisible to the immune system, lacking the biological signals needed to trigger a defensive response.
