On January 9, the 27 ambassadors of the European Union gave their approval to the EU–Mercosur free trade agreement. Following this milestone, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to be in Paraguay on Saturday, January 17, for the official signing of the deal.
This marks a historic moment for European trade policy and opens access to a combined market of more than 700 million consumers. Italy is taking particular interest in this agreement because of its potential impact on the country’s world-renowned food and wine sectors. One of the most significant features of the pact is the protection it provides for 57 Italian products with protected geographical indications.
