October is Italian American Heritage Month and the rich history in Broome County is something to celebrate and remember. According to Broome County Historian Roger Luther, in the late 1800s, a man named Maronie was the first Italian to immigrate to Binghamton. “He settled on Clinton street,” Luther said. “And shortly after that three or four more Italians came to the area.”
Luther explained shortly after, a surge of Italians came to Binghamton with one goal in mind. “Because there was a lot of work available and it was nice, clean work compared to working in a coal mine,” Luther said. “The pay was good. So, we got this huge influx of not just Italians but of all nationalities.”
