The impact of US tariffs on Italian exports and economy

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

The Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) has analyzed the danger to the Italian economy posed by the tariffs repeatedly announced by the new U.S. administration, which are currently expected to take effect on April 2, unless reconsidered.

In Italy, exports have been a fundamental resource for many production sectors in the past five years; however, the exposure of certain areas of the country to fluctuations in global markets and potential tightening of trade policies has become a relevant issue. Today, as many as 22 Italian provinces depend on exports that exceed 50% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), putting the economic balance of one in five provinces at risk in the event of an escalation in global trade wars.
