For Joe Tordella, the new U.S. Consul General in Florence, representing America in Italy is also a homecoming. His great-grandparents emigrated from Catanzaro approximately 100 years ago, and he grew up in New Jersey surrounded by Italian American traditions.
In an interview published October 29, 2026, by The Florentine, editor-in-chief Helen Farrell explored Tordella’s family history, diplomatic priorities, and commitment to strengthening transatlantic relations.
Appointed in August, Tordella leads a consular district encompassing Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and San Marino. Approximately 80,000 Americans live there permanently, more than 18,000 attend American university programs, and nearly 4 million visit annually.
His priorities include protecting American citizens, expanding bilateral economic opportunities, and strengthening educational and cultural exchanges. More than 400 American companies operate in the district, creating opportunities in pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, engineering, and technology.
Tordella also confirmed that the U.S. Consulate in Florence will remain operational, addressing previous concerns about its possible closure.
The interview highlighted the upcoming 60th anniversary of Florence’s devastating 1966 flood. Tordella recalled American assistance, including the Mud Angels, Senator Ted Kennedy, and fundraising efforts supported by Jacqueline Kennedy.
The Consulate is sponsoring Rising from the Arno, November 1–8, a commemorative initiative connecting Florence with Providence, Rhode Island.
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, Tordella sees his diplomatic mission as another chapter in a remarkable shared history – one that began with his own family's journey across the Atlantic.
