Four years of government: the data on services for Italians abroad

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Marking four years in office, the Italian government led by Giorgia Meloni released a summary document outlining primary institutional figures and policy outcomes since taking office. According to the report published by Palazzo Chigi, domestic measures included 140 billion euros in tax cuts for households and businesses, a 70% decrease in irregular border arrivals, and the reported addition of 1.4 million permanent employment contracts across the country.

A specific section of the document covers state services for Italian citizens residing abroad. In addition to reviewing citizenship regulations, the administration reported significant activity across its consular network. Since 2023, Italian diplomatic and consular offices have issued 2 million passports and more than 670,000 electronic identity cards. Emergency operations managed by the Crisis Unit involved assisted evacuations and departures for over 25,000 nationals. The consular service also monitored more than 5,800 detainees in foreign correctional institutions and assisted in 1,000 cross-border disputes involving minors.

Cultural and educational programs formed another key area in the official report. Data indicates that state-supported initiatives established over 22,000 Italian language courses globally, reaching more than 105,000 enrolled students.

Concurrently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by Antonio Tajani, reviewed its diplomatic activities. Stated priorities included maintaining international partnerships, providing crisis relief in conflict zones, and supporting Italian companies abroad – while working with origin and transit nations on migration management and promoting scientific and cultural exchanges.
