Fort Walton Beach opens October with tribute to Italian American heritage and nearly 50 years of local community roots

October begins in Fort Walton Beach with a formal nod to a community whose local roots stretch back nearly half a century. The City Council has proclaimed October 2026 as Italian American Heritage and Culture Month, recognizing the history, volunteer work and cultural contributions of Italian Americans in Fort Walton Beach and across Florida.

The proclamation was presented during the Sept. 15 City Council meeting, when Mayor Nic Allegretto recognized members of the Joseph B. Franzalia Lodge and read the declaration. The local lodge has been part of Fort Walton Beach since 1978, giving the organization a 48-year presence in the city.
