Donizetti Visits the American Revolution

By: Laura Stanfield Prichard, Marisa Sanchez

As lovers of opera, American musical comedy, and historic houses, it was a delight to join the audience (some in period dress) on Sunday at the beautifully-restored Emerson Colonial Theatre on Boston Common to celebrate America250 with an entirely new production of Donizetti’s Daughter of the Regiment, mounted by the Boston Lyric Opera. Brief highlights from the BLO production can be heard HERE. Tickets for the reprise performances can be had HERE.

In keeping with the storied history of the hall, which presented the mid-century pre-Broadway tryouts of Anything Goes, Carousel, and Annie Get Your Gun, the show took daring risks, interpolated a variety of lighter (and more American) music, and leaned into local history.
