Direct flight from Sardinia to New York will take off in 2026

Delta Airlines will launch the first-ever scheduled transatlantic flight from Sardinia, with direct service between Olbia and New York beginning May 2026 and running through October. Starting then, the airport at Olbia-Costa Smeralda will become connected to JFK by Delta, marking the island’s debut in long-haul intercontinental air routes.

The idea took root after Delta asked its passengers – and employees – to choose among three Mediterranean destinations: Ibiza, Malta, or Olbia. Olbia won by a significant margin. The company then made it official: it would make Sardinia part of its European network via the Olbia-New York route.

Executives from Geasar and Sogeaal – the joint operators of the airports in Olbia and Alghero – celebrated the decision. They described it as a huge achievement for Sardinia, not just for tourism but for its international profile. What was once considered almost a dream when first discussed has now become a reality. The whole project has been in the works for about two years, involving regional authorities, tourism bodies, and local operators pooling efforts to promote Sardinia as more than just a seasonal destination.

Delta will operate four flights per week on this route, using Boeing 767 aircraft. The service is seasonal – active only from May through October. Ticket sales are already open on Delta’s website, making advance booking possible.

For the airport authorities, this is only the beginning. With this new connection to the United States, they expect a spillover effect: other airlines may follow suit, and more long-distance routes might be added to and from the island. They see this as an opportunity to upgrade the local infrastructure and services to meet higher visitor expectations – while still preserving the special character and unique appeal of Sardinia.

In sum, what once seemed like an ambitious proposal – a dream lightly spoken of two years ago – is now a confirmed route. Olbia will soon welcome direct transatlantic flights, bringing the U.S. closer to Sardinia and opening new possibilities for tourism, trade, and international engagement.
