Ciao Italia Matthews will bring the sights, sounds, flavors and traditions of Italy to North Carolina on Saturday, September 26, 2026, transforming Stumptown Park into an Italian-inspired gathering place for 9 hours of food, music, art and culture.
The free festival will run from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stumptown Park, 120 South Trade Street, Matthews, NC 28105, just outside Charlotte.
Designed to recreate the atmosphere of an Italian piazza, Ciao Italia Matthews will feature Italian food, wine, gelato and pastries, accompanied by strolling musicians playing instruments including the mandolin, accordion and violin. Entertainment will continue throughout the day, with operatic and popular Italian songs, a Frank Sinatra tribute and a humorous introduction to Italian words, phrases and hand gestures.
Art will also play a major role. Internationally known sculptor Peter Rubino is scheduled to create a 200-pound clay sculpture live on stage, with the performance choreographed to music. Visitors can also see a display of exotic Italian automobiles.
For those looking for a more hands-on experience, the festival offers 1-hour classes devoted to pasta making, clay sculpting and Italian history. Class capacity is limited to 20 participants each, and advance registration is required.
The history program explores Italy from the Roman era through national unification while highlighting the country's contributions to art, science, architecture, music and cuisine.
With free admission and an entire day devoted to Italian heritage, Ciao Italia Matthews offers North Carolina residents an opportunity to experience a small piece of Italy without leaving the Charlotte area.
