Is our reverence for la famiglia genetic?

Have you heard of the term "blood memory"? Until recently, I hadn't. Although I have felt that which the term points to many times and, unknowingly, it was exactly this mysterious, magical idea I had been, again and again, trying to define on the show with guest after guest.

With Anthony currently overseas gallivanting through Italy (Who me? Jealous?), I recently recorded an episode of The Italian American Podcast on my own, with the impressive Mickela Mallozzi, host of the Emmy-Award winning television series "Barefeet with Mickela Mallozzi." (The episode is scheduled to air on August 14th.) Yet again, the topic of that enigmatic feeling that can come over you – when you go to Italy, say, or when you are around other Italians, or participating in a very Italian-centric event – surfaced in our conversation. What is that? I yet again found myself asking another guest. What is that thing you feel, almost in your bones, which tells you you are somewhere you belong, or among people you belong to, or participating in a tradition that belongs to you. And Mickela said, "It's like blood memory."
