Amedeo Obici: Italian of the Week

On July 15, 1877, Amedeo Obici was born in Oderzo, Veneto, Italy to Pietro and Luigia. His father died shortly thereafter, leaving behind his wife, two sons and two daughters. In 1888, Amedeo's uncle invited him to live with his family in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Amedeo sailed from France to New York a year later.

He was unable to speak any English, and his destination (Scranton) was scrawled on a piece of paper that was attached to his coat. When he arrived in Brooklyn he took a train towards his new home, but was misdirected and ended up in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Eventually he found his way to his uncle, but would later return to this temporary home to work and learn English.
