È l'arte prestata alla scienza. Già perché, grazie ai dipinti del Canaletto e del Bellotto, i cosiddetti «vedutisti», e più indietro nel tempo col Veronese, è stato possibile ricostruire il livello del mare della città lagunare, ripercorrendo a ritroso la linea del tempo fino al 1350.
L'intuizione è del professor Dario Camuffo, ex direttore dell'Isac Cnr di Padova, che in uno studio pubblicato nel 2017 dal titolo «A novel proxy and the sea level rise in Venice, Italy, from 1350 to 2014», è riuscito a valutare con precisione e rigore scientifico l'innalzamento del livello del mare a partire dal tardo Medioevo ad oggi.
