More than half of Italians moving abroad are between ages 20 and 40

The number of Italians emigrating abroad has resumed growing since 2012: after reaching a total of 100,000 people in 2014, last year the expatriates aged 20-40 for the first time crossed the symbolic 50% threshold of the total. As a result, the younger and most productive share of expatriated population is now officially the majority, according to fresh data by the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (AIRE).


In 2015, 107,529 Italians emigrated, more than 6,000 more compared with the previous year. Of them, 56% are men, and 44% women. More interestingly, the expatriates aged between 20 and 40 in 2015 totaled 54,540, making them the absolute majority of Italian citizens residing abroad.
