Good news on the unemployment front. Compared to last year, in April Italy registered 215,000 more working people, especially with permanent contracts (+279,000), while both temporary and independent workers are decreasing. This proves that the tax break for companies hiring with permanent contracts – although slightly reduced in 2016 – is delivering some good results.
Also, in Italy there are 93,000 less unemployed people and 292,000 less inactive people compared to April 2015. Nonetheless, we need to be cautious analyzing these data, also because the "structural" problems of our labor market have been the same for years, as we will see later. Moreover, employment levels have increased for the second month in a row, and also unemployment has increased compared to March, remaining quite high (11.7%).
