New East Arlington eatery Sugo aims to revive Italian classics

With the recent opening of Sugo Cucina Italiana in the former Francesca's space in East Arlington, the neighborhood is cementing its reputation as a destination for Italian food. Za, Ristorante Olivio and Comella's are all a stone's throw from Sugo's front door at 162 Massachusetts Ave., with a passel of pizzerias, including Maria's and Sabatino's, just beyond.


To this mix, Sugo owner Rudy Maniscalco said he hopes to bring something different -- classic Italian fare with a twist, based on recipes his mother spent decades honing in her cramped North End kitchen. "My mom is the inspiration for almost everything here," Maniscalco said. "She loved to cook, and she loved people."
