Roundabout Theatre Company on Monday announced a new Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' play The Rose Tattoo, starring Oscar winner Marisa Tomei as Serafina Delle Rose. The show, directed by Trip Cullman, was previously performed with Tomei in the same role during the 2016 Williamstown Theatre Festival. It is set to land on Broadway this fall, with preview performances beginning at New York's American Airlines Theatre on Sept. 19. An official opening is slated for Oct. 15.
Tomei's character, Serafina — an Italian-American widow who reignites her passion for love and lust after meeting a handsome suitor — was previously portrayed by theater vets Maureen Stapleton and Mercedes Ruehl on Broadway, and onscreen by Anna Magnani, who won an Academy Award for the 1955 film adaptation.
