Following the tragic collapse of Baltimore‘s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March, a collaborative team has proposed a design for its replacement. The team comprises Carlo Ratti Associati — the architecture firm led by architect and MIT professor Carlo Ratti — WeBuild, an Italian construction group, and Michel Virlogeux, a French structural engineer.
The collapse in March 2024 was caused by a cargo ship which lost power and struck a pier supporting the bridge, causing a large section to fall into the water. The cause of the ship’s power failure is still under investigation, and the event has left the city with a gaping hole in its infrastructure.
