The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles seeks one, qualified undergraduate student preferably in the fields of History, Art History, Social Science, Urban Planning, Museum Studies and other relevant areas of study to serve as a summer intern funded by the Getty Grant Program.


ABOUT THE ITALIAN AMERICAN MUSEUM OF LOS ANGELES (IAMLA)
Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is located in the Italian Hall overlooking Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles. Built in 1908, the Italian Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Slated to open in 2013, the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles will document the history and ongoing contributions of Italian Americans and Italians in the context of our multiethnic nation.


INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
The majority of the internship will take place at the Italian American Museum's offices in downtown Los Angeles. Some off site work will be required as will attendance at four Getty sponsored intern events. The intern will conduct research on the history of Italian Americans and Italians in Southern California as well as a variety of other topics in local history, assigned by supervisor. Intern will also assist with the creation of the Museum's educational program and will participate in ongoing academic and community-oriented projects, such as the Oral History Project. Intern will receive training in the conservation, care, and accessioning of artifacts and archival materials as well as collections management and spend extensive time with the IAMLA's collection.

QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANT:
The Getty requires that the intern be a member of an underrepresented group in professions related to museums and the visual arts. Internships are available to currently enrolled undergraduates. The IAMLA seeks an organized, highly reliable, motivated candidate who demonstrate initiative and a desire to conduct advanced research. Applicants with majors listed above are preferred. All applicants must 1) have completed at least one semester of college by June 2013; 2) be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County; 3) demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and ideally, have strong computer skills. Research experience and knowledge of local history and/or Italian American history preferred.

Stipend: $3,500 for the ten-week period
