Vintage '50s footage ofDick Clark's "American Bandstand" shows him trying to maintain a modicum of quiet as he's about to announce the upcoming in-studio performance of a guest star. He asks for a moment of silence before the all-hell-breaks-loose moment when he calmly says, "Frankie Avalon" into his microphone. The screaming is deafening until young Frankie starts to sing.
Then those screaming girls turn into starry-eyed girls hanging on his every note. They all saw themselves as that Venus in blue jeans...you know, the one who "broke his heart." The same thing would happen when Clark introduced Bobby Rydell, and then again when Fabian performed live in that same small studio in Philadelphia.
