News-Miner Community Perspective: Fairbanks started because of the discovery of gold in this area by Felix Pedro (his Italian name was Felice Pedroni), an immigrant from Fanano, Italy, and the establishment of a trading post by E.T. Barnette to service the miners. Our Golden Days celebration each July celebrates and recalls Felix Pedro's discovery of gold and the establishment of our Golden Heart City.

In 2003, Mayor Steve Thompson visited Fanano with a group from Fairbanks. Last August, Bill and June Rogers, Sylvia and I visited Fanano. The hospitality and generosity shown to us by Mayor Muzzarelli and many others were terrific.
