Stepping Back: A Journey into the ancient art of Italy

Sep 28, 2016 462

Opening reception Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 pm. American Italian Museum, 1227 Central Ave., Albany. Stepping Back is a cultural exhibit showcasing contemporary Italian artists working in the ancient and traditional art forms of Italy. Five artists working regionally, nationally and internationally are participating in this unique exhibit highlighting the ancient art forms of Italy. These techniques, best known through masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, will be shown in a learning exhibit on how they have transitioned into contemporary culture. The goal is awareness and appreciation of the contributions of Old World Italian art to modern art and artistry.

Stepping Back was conceived by Mico Di Arpo, a master buon fresco artist and resident of Troy. In addition to Di Arpo, other contributing artists include Tony Iadicicco (oil painting), Joseph Anastasio (tile painting), Rosemary Prock (furniture painting), and Janet Oppedisano (sculpture). This one-of-a-kind exhibit was designed specifically for Italian Heritage month, in cooperation with the Italian American Heritage Museum and Cultural Center in Albany.

This one-of-a-kind exhibit, highlighting art forms dating to the 11th century and earlier, will encompass gallery displays, explanations of the mediums, and examples of the tools and techniques used in the creation of Old World artworks. Visitors to the museum will be able to touch actual buon fresco, see the materials and tools it's made with, and learn how frescoes are painstakingly created.

Stepping Back will open with a reception on Friday, Oct. 7, 7 pm to 9 pm, and will continue until Nov. 27. For more information or to request an interview, contact Joe Anastasio at 518-435-1979
